Diamond Cuts: What To Know

A diamond cut depicts how well a diamond is cut and polished, including how well-proportioned the stone is, its depth and its symmetry. It is important to note that the diamond cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond (e.g. Heart or Pear Shape). 

The quality of the cut directly impacts the diamond’s beauty and brilliance. A well-cut diamond is luminous and reflects white and coloured light back to your eyes. Conversely, a poorly cut diamond is dull instead of brilliant.

The price of a diamond cut is determined by its precision and quality, particularly its dimensions and symmetry. A fine cut diamond, for example, is distinguished by its superior cut, polish and symmetry, where the depth, table and all other measurements are as accurate as possible. As a result, you will pay a higher price for the diamond compared to a conventional superb cut diamond.

If the facets (a diamond’s shiny flat surfaces) are proportionate, they refract and reflect light in a spectacular way. Facets and pavilions in less perfectly cut diamonds do not refract and reflect light as brilliantly.

The increased diamond cut expense is justified by the quantity of light return and brightness seen in excellently cut diamonds. A diamond, no matter its carat weight or table size, is less than dazzling if it lacks brilliance and fire.

To put it another way, the cut of a diamond is the feature that has the most influence on its appearance. That’s why the higher quality cut diamond’s pricing is well worth it, and it’s preferable to invest in Cut rather than Colour or Clarity.

Retailers often use the terms Triple Excellent Cut, Hearts & Arrows, and Brilliant Cut. If you’re looking to make your money’s worth from your diamond purchase, we personally suggest that you pay a little extra in finding a Triple Excellent Cut diamond, which will shine better.
